Catholic History of Wilmington, Delaware:

Wilmington was part of the Diocese of Philadelphia until 1868, when it became a separate diocese.

In 1830 the first Catholic Orphan Asylum in the state was opened in Wilmington, and in 1839 the first parochial school in the State was built adjoining the Cathedral of Saint Peter.
