In 1890, Reverend William Ketcham started visiting Tulsa to hold Masses in private residences, and permission was obtained from the Creek Indian tribal chief to build a church.

The first church building was constructed and dedicated in 1899, followed by the construction of the current cathedral in 1914.

The Icon Collection in Holy Family Cathedral:

The icon collection is on long-term loan to the Cathedral by Cuesta Foundation. The foundation is owned and managed by the Oliphant family who are parishioners of Holy Family Cathedral. The icon collection was curated by the late Nancy W. Oliphant who was both an icon artist and collector. The exhibit features both her original works and icons collected for artistic style or devotional significance. Nancy was a devout Catholic who studied under the apprenticeship of Master Iconographer Br. Robert Lentz O.F.M. Her style is deeply grounded in both spirituality and theology with aesthetics from both east and western iconography.

The collection is divided into five cases: the left two containing images of the Saints, the middle two containing images of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the fourth containing images of Christ, and the rightmost containing images from Scripture.
