Steubenville, Ohio: College of Saint Joseph the Worker

About Jacob Imam, founder of The College of Saint Joseph the Worker in Steubenville, Ohio:

The story of the founder of this college is interesting, to say the least.  His name is Jacob Imam. Jacob was born into a Muslim home, and converted to Catholicism under the guidance of his godfather, Walter Hooper (C. S. Lewis’s personal secretary).

Jacob graduated from the University of Oxford as a Marshall scholar with his masters and doctorate, writing his dissertation on theology and economics.

He is the Founder and VP of Finance for the College of St. Joseph the Worker.

About The College of Saint Joseph the Worker in Steubenville, Ohio:

Students of the College of St. Joseph the Worker will graduate with a B.A. in Catholic Studies as well as a solid foundation in the skilled trades. The goal is to produce faithful Christians who are virtuous citizens, intellectually formed, and capable of building up the Church in their communities.  You can read an interview Jacob did in Crisis Magazine here.

Their website states:In ancient pagan societies, as again today, people often thought of manual labor as undignified. The Roman consul and lawyer Cicero once remarked that all workers “are engaged in vulgar business; for a workshop can have nothing respectable about it.”

Aristotle, speaking a few hundred years prior, stated, “the citizens must not lead the life of craftsmen … for such a life is ignoble, and inimical to virtue.” Such convictions were the basis for the slave societies of antiquity. Christianity casts aside such ideas“.

Editor’s note: it is becoming a commonplace story that students are graduating from college with huge debts; thereby postponing marriage and starting a family, which has a negative effect on our country.  Not to mention the fact that students find out that some of these degrees do not offer the same employment opportunities that they were expecting.

Those graduating from The College of Saint Joseph the Worker are unlikely to face such a problem for two reasons. Number one the cost, which be much less than a four-year education, pobably half the cost….and perhaps more importantly, their skills are likely to be in high demand for many years to come.  Their specialized education is in such skills as HVAC repair, carpentry, plumbing, etc.
