About the Sisters of Life:
The Sisters of Life is a contemplative and active religious community of women founded in 1991 by John Cardinal O’Connor for the protection and enhancement of the sacredness of every human life. In addition to the three traditional vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, they are also consecrated under a special, fourth vow to protect and enhance the sacredness of human life. Reverence and gratitude for the unique and unrepeatable gift of each human life made in the image and likeness of God fuels the prayer of each Sister
Inspired by the love of Christ our Spouse, the author of Life, they desire to “pour out all their gifts of nature and grace in the Apostolate, that nothing of the gift of life, and no one to whom it has been given, should be lost”.
Their missions are carried out with the heart of the Church and with the hope of revealing to those we serve the inherent goodness and beauty of their own lives, so that each person may see and experience the truth that they are an unrepeatable creation of the Master. Among their programs are the following:
- Welcome pregnant guests to live with us in the Holy Respite of one of our convents.
- Assist pregnant women in need of practical assistance through our Visitation Mission.
- Host retreats at Villa Maria Guadalupe Retreat Center.
- Invite those who have suffered abortion to hope and healing through day and weekend Entering Canaan Retreats.
- Serve as Respect Life Coordinators for the New York Archdiocesan Family Life / Respect Life Office.
- Offer the use of the Dr. Joseph Stanton Human Life Issues Library.
About Villa Maria Guadalupe:
The establishment of Villa Maria Guadalupe as a spiritual home for the pro-life community is a response to Pope John Paul II’s call for a “great campaign in support of life” in his encyclical, Evangelium Vitae. Villa Maria Guadalupe is an international retreat center of the Knights of Columbus that is operated by the Sisters of Life and sits on the top of a hill crest surrounded by acres of grounds providing a tranquil getaway for prayer and reflection from the noise and bustle of the city.
The Sisters offer evenings of Recollection, educational seminars on life issues and retreats for everyone (themes include Theology of the Body, Young Adult Retreats, Post-Abortion Healing, and retreats on the Dignity and Vocation of Women) plus weekend programs for young adults, married couples, families, priests and religious. All are centered on the Eucharist and draw from the liturgy and teachings of the Catholic Church.
A sanctuary of renewal, hope and mercy under the protection of the Blessed Mother, Villa Maria Guadalupe promises to play a unique and integral role as the spiritual foundation of the Culture of Life.
