Set along a popular cruise route known as “The Inside Passage”, Skagway is a compact city in southeast Alaska. It has several gold-rush-era buildings, now preserved as part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park as well as The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad….a railroad that runs vintage locomotives up the steep Chilkoot trail with sweeping mountain views.The White Pass & Yukon Route (WP&YR). Built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, provided a safer and faster alternative to the treacherous Chilkoot Trail, transporting prospectors and supplies to the Yukon gold fields. Construction relied on 35,000 workers, black blasting powder, and crude tools, completing the line in 1900 with the ceremonial Golden Spike in Carcross.
As of the 2020 census, the population of Skagway was 1,240, up from 968 in 2010. The population doubles in the summer tourist season (generally from June to August). During these summer months, the weather is mild and most attractions are open in order to deal with the large number of summer tourists each year.

The present church was built in 1979 with the help of the Christian Brothers and the people of Skagway. Much of the funding was provided by the Catholic Extension Society.

Traveling to Skagway, Alaska:
By ship: The vast majority of visitors to Skagway — over one million per year — arrive in town by cruise ship for a day in port.
By ferry: Skagway is also accessible via the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system.
By car: Skagway is one of the few Inside Passage communities accessible by road via the Klondike Highway, which crosses the US/Canadian Border into the Yukon Territory.
By air: Several companies provide air-taxi service between Skagway and other Inside Passage communities, with daily scheduled flights between Juneau and Skagway (airport code SGY). If you are a private pilot flying to Skagway, it is wise to talk to a pilot who has experience here. There have been a number of fatal accidents over the past decades, generally by privately owned aircraft owners who did not understand the tight constraints of the path of landings and takeoffs.
