About Silverthorne, Colorado:
Nestled in the Blue River Valley between the Gore Range (to the west) and the Continental Divide (to the east), Silverthorne is named after Judge Marshall Silverthorn, a 19th-century prospector and miners’ court judge. It started as a workers’ camp during the construction of the Dillon Reservoir (1961–1963) and later became a stop along Interstate 70. Silverthorne incorporated on September 5, 1967 (some sources say April), and has grown through annexations from a modest settlement into a modern mountain community. . Prominent nearby peaks include Buffalo Mountain and Red Mountain. As of the 2020 census, Silverthorne had a population of about 4,402; recent estimates put it around 4,800–5,200 and growing.
At approximately 8,790 ft (2,680 m), Silverthorne has cold, snowy winters and mild summers. Annual snowfall averages over 100 inches. Silverthorne serves as an excellent base camp for outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, fishing (Blue River), kayaking/paddleboarding, rafting, and wildlife viewing. It is also close to five major ski resorts plus Nordic trails, skating, and snowshoeing.
