Saint Patrick Catholic Church (also known as St. Patrick Parish) is a historic Roman Catholic parish in Tacoma’s Old Town / North End neighborhood, part of the Archdiocese of Seattle. The parish was established in 1891. The first Mass was celebrated on Christmas Day 1891 in a temporary space. A modest wooden church (30′ × 40′) was built in spring 1892 on Tacoma Avenue and Starr Street; Dominican Sisters soon arrived and founded what is described as the first free parochial school west of the Mississippi.
The original church burned on August 15, 1905 (Feast of the Assumption). The current building at North 12th and J Streets was designed by architect Frederick Heath, with construction beginning in 1906. Bishop Edward O’Dea dedicated it on June 30, 1907. The church building is often praised for its early-20th-century beauty and welcoming atmosphere.The parish has deep roots in “Old Tacoma” and has long emphasized education, sacraments, prayer, and service.
The parish belongs to Parish Family 36 (Tacoma-Vashon) under the Archdiocese’s Partners in the Gospel initiative, sharing resources and clergy with Holy Cross Church (Tacoma) and Saint John Vianney Church (Vashon Island).
The parish operates Saint Patrick Catholic School (a major ministry of the parish, with roots going back to the 1890s). The community offers various ministries, faith formation programs (including Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and youth Confirmation preparation), St. Vincent de Paul Society, stewardship opportunities, and resources such as FORMED.
