San Jose, California: Mount Saint Joseph Carmelite Monastery

About Mount Saint Joseph Carmelite Monastery in San Jose, California:

Mount St. Joseph Carmelite Monastery, located in San Jose, California, is home to the Postulancy for the Discalced Carmelite Friars of the California-Arizona Province of St. Joseph. When men join their Province, they enter here.

The first year is known as postulancy, where they transition into religious life. During this year, the men begin formation in the charism and spirituality of the Discalced Carmelite Friars. At the end of the year, they move to the novitiate in Mount Angel, Oregon, are clothed in Our Lady’s Habit, and receive their religious name as a brother.

After the completion of the novitiate year, if the brother has a priestly vocation, he will continue on at their St. Elijah House of Studies in Mt. Angel, Oregon.

Mount St. Joseph has an important place in the hearts of the Carmelitie Friars as it is where most of them began their religious lives.

The California-Arizona Province consists of seven communities, including the Ugandan Mission. For more information about the Province, click here.
