San Diego, California: Basilica Mission San Diego de Alcala

About the Basilica Mission San Diego de Alcala in San Diego, California:

The Mission San Diego de Alcala was the first of the Spanish missions to be built in California. The mission was established in July 1769 by Father Juniper Serra.

In 1775, it was attacked and burned to the ground by natives who also killed Father Jayme, a resident of the mission, making him the first Christian martyr of California.

The Missions was rebuilt a few years later, but this time with fort-like construction to prevent a repeat of the previous massacre. In 1834 Mexico took possession of the fort. The United States formally annexed California on May 30, 1848 and it became a state within the U.S.A.

In 1892, the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondolet started a mission school for the native Indians. The current building was built in 1931 and designed to look like the earlier mission.

It is an active parish with two Masses daily and many Masses on the weekends in both English and Spanish.
