Pittsburg, Kansas

About Pittsburg, Kansas:

Pittsburg, Kansas, is located in southeastern Kansas, near the Missouri border. It is the largest city in southeast Kansas, with a population of about 20,500–20,600. Founded in 1876 as a coal-mining camp (originally called New Pittsburgh after Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) and incorporated in 1880, it grew rapidly as a zinc- and coal-mining and railroad center. The surrounding landscape still shows the effects of extensive strip mining, much of which has been reclaimed as wildlife areas and lakes.

Today, Pittsburg is a regional hub and college town, home to Pittsburg State University (founded 1903). The local economy centers on education, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and services. The city features a revitalized downtown, a relatively young median age (influenced by the university), and access to outdoor recreation on former mined lands.
