About Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Newport News, Virginia:
At one point in time, Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Newport News had the dubious distinction of being featured in the 2001 book “Ugly as Sin”, a critique of most modern churches being built in the U.S. in the late 20th century.
Our Lady of Mt Carmel changed its entire look in 2024, ripping out its theater-style seating & freestanding table altar, and putting in a marble carved sanctuary with rails. The floor was flattened, side pews removed, a crucifix added, and a proper altar of sacrifice was built. The result, we think you will agree, is the way we would hope most Catholic churches would emulate if they happen to have suffered the changes that took place in the not-too-recent past.
