About Mepkin Abbey:

Mepkin Abbey is a community of Roman Catholic monks established in 1949 on the site of the historic Mepkin Plantation located on the Cooper River, north of Charleston, South Carolina. Founded by the monks of Gethsemani in Kentucky, the brothers of Mepkin belong to the worldwide Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance popularly known as Trappist. Following The Rule of St. Benedict, the monks at Mepkin Abbey devote their lives to prayer, spiritual study, work and hospitality. Living by the work of their hands, the monks provide a livelihood for themselves and the poor.

Visitors might stay only a few minutes or they may walk the Gardens leisurely and remain for an hour or more. You can stop by the Reception center for a map of the Gardens and for any other information you may need.

Church Tours are available for a small fee.

There is also a gift shop in the Reception Center where you can buy mushrooms and garden compost from the Abbey’s farm as well as candies, preserves and creamed honey from other Trappist Abbeys. The Shop also offers select books, tapes, religious articles, icons, candles, and other specialty gift item
