Minooka, Illinois: Annunciation Monastery of the Poor Clare Colettine Nuns

About The Poor Clare Colettine Nuns in Minooka, Illinois:

The Colettine Poor Clares are a reform branch of the Order of St. Clare, which was originally founded by St. Clare of Assisi in 1211.  Saint Colette of Corbie, born in 1381, sought to reform the Poor Clares in the early 15th century, returning the order to its original Rule of St. Clare, emphasizing a life of prayer, contemplation, and manual work. They are known for their austere lifestyle, which includes severe fasts and strict enclosure, meaning they live a cloistered life away from the outside world. In 1410, Saint Colette of Corbie established the first successful community of Poor Clare nuns under her reform in Besançon, France. Over her lifetime, she founded 18 monasteries, spreading the reform across Europe, including communities in Germany and Belgium.

Today, Colettine Poor Clare communities exist in various locations, primarily in France, but also in other parts of Europe, and in the U.S. as well. They maintain a contemplative lifestyle, focusing on prayer and community life. The Colettine nuns are recognized for their dedication to the spiritual life and their role as a “powerhouse of prayer” within their local communities. Their commitment to a life of poverty, prayer, and community continues to inspire many within the Catholic Church today.
