About the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Lake Charles:
The Cathedral has been undergoing restoration to bring it back to its former glory. Latin gold stenciling beneath the clerestory windows has been restored. The original, done in 1939 under Monsignor Vigliero, was the first attempt to beautify the interior of the church. It was done at the same time the stained glass windows were installed.
Before that, the walls were painted white and the windows were translucent glass. The words over the altar in the apse read: AVE MARIA GRATIA PLENA DOMINUS TECUM (Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you).
Today, when you enter the church, you will find yourself in one of the most beautiful Cathedrals anywhere….a comfort to those who tired of churches looking like gymnasiums or bomb shelters…here you can find real inspiration and peace.
