The Tampa Bay area is a major metropolitan region on Florida’s Gulf Coast, centered on Tampa Bay (Florida’s largest open-water estuary). Its core urban centers are Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater. Much of Tampa occupies a peninsula jutting into the bay. The area features barrier-island beaches, waterfronts, and inland suburbs.
The 2020 Census showed a population of about 3.18 million, with more recent estimates of roughly 3.42 million (making it the 17th-largest MSA in the U.S. and Florida’s second-largest after Miami)
Port Tampa Bay is one of the largest in the Southeast (key for phosphate exports and other cargo) and a cruise homeport. Tampa International Airport is a major hub known for high traveler satisfaction. MacDill Air Force Base (home to U.S. Central Command) contributes significantly. Recent nonfarm employment has hovered around 1.54–1.56 million, with unemployment in the mid-to-high 4% range in 2026 data. Tourism generates billions in economic impact.
Spanish explorers (including Ponce de León and later expeditions) arrived in the 16th century. Permanent American settlement began with Fort Brooke in 1824. Growth accelerated in the late 19th century with railroads (Henry Plant), the phosphate industry, and the cigar industry in Ybor City (drawing Cuban, Spanish, Italian, and other immigrants). The region expanded rapidly after World War II.
Tampa, the largest city and commercial/cultural core (population ~400,000+) features a revitalized downtown with the Riverwalk, Channelside, Hyde Park, and historic Ybor City.
Saint Petersburg (known as the “Sunshine City,”) has a strong arts scene, waterfront, and downtown museums.
The area offers a mix of urban energy, beach relaxation, family attractions, and outdoor activities (boating, fishing, kayaking).
