Doylestown, Pennsylvania (Philadelphia area): Our Lady of Czestochowa Shrine
About Our Lady of Czestochowa Shrine:
Under the auspices of the Pauline Fathers, this shrine is focused on ministering to the Polish-American community in the United States in honor of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Poland.
From humble beginnings in a barn in 1955 (see photo), it has grown to include over 170 acres of land offering a retreat house, the main church, chapel, outdoor Stations of the Cross, Cafeteria and more.
In the lower church there is a replica of Our Lady of Czestechowa, as it is in Jasna Gora, Poland.
There are also four side chapels: St. Paul the First Hermit, Our Lady of Nazareth, Divine Mercy, and Our Lady of Guadalupe. There are daily Masses in both Polish and English, Confession, Novenas and many more spiritual exercises.
The shrine has received many famous visitors over the years. Cardinal Wojtyla, before he became Pope John Paul II, visited the shrine twice: once in 1969 and again in 1976. Josef Cardinal Glemp, Archbishop of Warsaw, was a frequent visitor. Others included President Ronald Reagan and then Vice-President George H.W. Bush.
Also on the grounds is a cemetery, where lie many benefactors and friends of the shrine. It has artworks depicting various aspects of Polish Catholic history. The feeling of love and joy of being a Catholic Christian in un-mistakable here.
