Charles Town, West Virginia: Saint James the Greater Catholic Church

About Saint James the Greater Catholic Church in Charles Town, West Virginia:

This beautiful church has mass in both English and Spanish.  In addition, it is responsible for the Chapel of Saint Peter, which is described below.

The Chapel of Saint Peter:

The chapel occupies a prominent location on the heights above Harpers Ferry. At one time, St. Peter’s was a fully operating parish but was closed in 1995. St. James Parish in Charles Town was given responsibility over St. Peter in Harpers Ferry. St. Peter’s is now maintained as a historic chapel within Harpers Ferry National Park.

Mass is celebrated on Sundays at 9:30 a.m.

St. James also assumed responsibility for the historic cemetery of St. Peter. It is situated on a hillside west of town with a beautiful view of the gap where the Potomac River and the Shenandoah River meet. The cemetery is the final resting place of some notable figures, including Luke Quinn (the Marine killed in the assault on John Brown’s Fort), and Father Michael Costello (the pastor of St. Peter’s during the Civil War).
