Hammond, Indiana, is the only city in the state of Indiana to border Illinois. Located in Lake County along Lake Michigan, this historic, diverse, and primarily working-class city is a key part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is close to the state line of Illinois, situated right across the Illinois-Indiana border. It is roughly 18 to 28 miles southeast of downtown Chicago. In 2026 it was announced that the The Chicago Bears National Football League team was advancing plans to relocate to Hammond. Following stalled negotiations with Illinois state lawmakers over a new stadium, the Bears’ board of directors voted to pursue a $2 billion stadium project near the Wolf Lake area in Hammond. If this does take place, it will no doubt bring many Catholic visitors to the town on game-day weekends, which will certainly increase Mass attendance in some of these churches.
