About Lanai:
Sometimes called the “Pineapple Island” due to its pineapple plantations, Lanai is the smallest of the populated islands and perhaps the least commercial. It is not easily reached by air…you need to ferry from nearby Oahu (which you can actually see in the distance) but it is a wonderful break from the sometimes hectic pace of the other islands.
Except for Lanai City, most of the land on the island (roughly 98%) is privately owned by Lawrence Joseph Ellison founder of Oracle Software.
The only major town on the island is Lanai City, with a population of around 3,000.
About Sacred Hearts Church in Lanai City, Hawaii:
Dedicated to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, this is the only church on the island, and offers many masses.The first Mass on Lānaʻi was celebrated by Sacred Hearts Father Modestus Favens in 1846 (with about 13 Catholics present at the time). The parish serves the entire island (whose boundaries are uniquely defined by the ocean). It is a small, welcoming community in the heart of Lanai City, known for its plantation-style character and hospitality to visitors.
