Also known as “The Big Island”, the island of Hawaii has a much slower pace than many of the other islands and is also home to an active volcano, Mauna Loa, the earth’s largest active volcano by both mass and volume. It was historically considered to be the largest volcano on Earth until the submarine mountain Tamu Massif was discovered to be larger. Mauna Loa is a shield volcano with relatively gentle slopes, and a volume estimated at 18,000 cubic miles (75,000 km3), although its peak is about 125 feet (38 meters) lower than that of its neighbor, Mauna Kea. According to the U.S.Geological Service, Mauna Loa has erupted 34 times since 1843, averaging about once every five years. Its eruptions are typically non-explosive and produce fluid basaltic lava that can travel long distances.
