About Brownsville, Texas:

The City of Brownsville is located at the southern tip of Texas along the Rio Grande, bordering Matamoros, Mexico. It’s the largest city in the Rio Grande Valley, with a population of about 187,831 as of 2023. Historically, it played a key role in the U.S.-Mexico border region, notably during the Mexican-American War, with the Battle of Palo Alto fought nearby in 1846.

Today, it’s a hub for trade, culture, and industry, heavily influenced by its proximity to Mexico. Economically, Brownsville thrives on international trade, manufacturing, and healthcare, with the Port of Brownsville serving as a major shipping point for goods like steel and agricultural products.

The city’s close ties to Mexico foster a vibrant bicultural community, with 93.9% of residents identifying as Hispanic or Latino (2020 Census).

Special events held in the city include “Charro Days”, a festive annual celebration held in late February that honors the region’s Mexican heritage, spanning both sides of the Rio Grande. The fiesta is named after the “Charro,” a symbol of the Mexican cowboy known for his vibrant attire and culture. The event has been going strong since 1938.

The city offers attractions like the Brownsville Zoo, Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park, and Resaca de la Palma State Park for outdoor enthusiasts. Its subtropical climate supports diverse wildlife, with nearby Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge hosting rare species like the ocelot.

Brownsville is also home to SpaceX’s Starbase facility, a key site for rocket development and launches, boosting local innovation and jobs. Space X (Space Exploration Technologies Corp.), as you probably know, is an American aerospace, telecommunications, and AI company founded by Elon Musk in 2002. It develops reusable rockets, operates the Starlink satellite internet network, and is developing spacecraft with the long-term goal of enabling human colonization of Mars. The roughly 5,000 employees have certainly had an impact on the local economy….both good and bad. SpaceX has triggered massive regional growth, job creation, and rising real estate values, while simultaneously straining housing affordability and altering the social and environmental dynamics of the area.
