About Amelia Island Florida:
Amelia Island is a 13-mile-long, roughly 2-mile-wide barrier island in Nassau County, on Florida’s northeastern Atlantic coast. It is Florida’s northernmost barrier island and the southernmost of the Sea Islands chain that stretches from South Carolina into Florida. It is widely known as the “Isle of Eight Flags”—the only place in the United States to have been under eight different flags of sovereignty (French, Spanish twice, British, Patriots, Green Cross of Florida, Mexican, Confederate, and U.S.). Its history spans more than 4,000 years, from the Timucuan people through European explorers, pirates, Civil War fortifications, Gilded Age visitors, and a significant African American heritage site at American Beach (founded by A.L. Lewis, Florida’s first Black millionaire).
Amelia Island has 13 miles of relatively uncrowded, pristine Appalachian quartz-sand beaches backed by dunes (some quite high). Popular spots include Main Beach Park (family-friendly with amenities), quieter stretches near Fort Clinch, American Beach, and access points throughout. Sea turtle nesting occurs roughly May–October.
The historic downtown Fernandina Beach has a Victorian-era district (about 50 blocks on the National Register) with shops, restaurants, galleries, and the Palace Saloon (Florida’s oldest continuously operating bar, since 1903). The area has deep maritime and shrimping roots—Fernandina is considered a birthplace of America’s modern shrimping industry. Activities include championship golf, spa resorts (notably The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island and Omni Amelia Island Resort), kayaking/canoeing the salt marshes and tidal creeks, fishing, boating, and horseback riding on the beach in some areas
Fort Clinch State Park is a major highlight at the north end of the island. This well-preserved Civil War-era fort sits on 1,400 acres with beaches, trails, fishing, camping, and wildlife viewing (dolphins, tortoises, birds, and occasional right whales). Other notable sites include Amelia Island Lighthouse (Florida’s oldest, built 1838; Amelia Island Museum of History; A.L. Lewis Museum at American Beach; Egans Creek Greenway, and nearby state parks/marshes for kayaking and nature.
The island has a relaxed, low-key “Old Florida” feel with no high-rises or theme-park crowds. It consistently ranks highly as a relaxing getaway, romantic destination, and top U.S. island in various travel lists.
