Construction of this church began in 1499 by Franciscan friars and was consecrated in 1515. It was restored in 1929-30.

From an artistic standpoint, this is one of the most beautiful churches in Switzerland, and the frescoes are among the finest in Europe.

Perhaps the most notable artwork here is the famous Renaissance fresco of the Passion and the Crucifixion by the Italian artist Bernardino Luini, dated 1529.   In addition, the fresco of the Last Supper is outstanding.
