Madrid: The Royal Oratory of Caballero de Gracia & tomb of Guadalupe Ortiz de Landázuri Fernández de Heredia

About The Oratory of the Caballero de Gracia (the Knight of Grace):

One of Madrid’s most interesting sites, it is often overlooked, even though it is in the center of the city.  It was designed by Juan de Villanueva in neoclassical style, resembling a small Roman basilica.

The Oratory belongs to the Eucharistic Association of the Knight of Grace, founded by Jacobo Gratii, the Knight of Grace, at the end of the 16th century.  The main purpose of the Association is to spread the devotion to the Eucharist, in addition to Mary Immaculate and St. Joseph, Patron of the Oratory.

There are some wonderful art works inside, especially highlights the image of the Holy . Christ of the Agony,  considered one of the best carvings of the Lord in the Cross in Madrid.

The Oratory is entrusted to priests of Opus Dei.  There are several Masses daily.

The Blessed Sacrament is exposed throughout the day, except for the hours when the Mass is celebrated.

Also located here is the tomb of Blessed Guadalupe Ortiz de Landázuri Fernández de Heredia, beatified on May 18, 2019.  Guadalupe Ortiz de Landazuri was born in Madrid, on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, 12 December 1916. In 1944, she met Saint Josemaria and eventually decided to dedicate her life to finding God in her professional work, sharing the conviction that everyone is called to be a saint.  A professor, she was one of the first women to join Opus Dei and she is the first layperson—man or woman–member of Opus Dei to be beatified.  You can read more about her here.
