About the Doejae Catholic Church in Wonju, South Korea:

Established in 1895, Doejae Catholic Church was the second Catholic church built in Korea and the first church to be built in traditional hanok style. Doejae. It was destroyed during the Korean War (1950-1953) and reconstructed in 2006.

Applying a Christian basilica layout to a Korean-style wooden structure, the church presents a unique charm with stone stairs, pebble-covered pathway and a mountain behind the building, which are characteristics commonly found at Korean Buddhist temples.

The building has become an example of the way in which Western culture was adopted in Korea, and the church has become one of the famous landmarks of Wanju.
