About The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Hope, São Miguel Island, Portugal:
This Sanctuary houses Portugal’s most revered image of Jesus. The sisters traveled to Rome to obtain permission to start the first convent on the island and Pope Paul III (1534-1549) gave them an image of the “Ecce homo.” The image is also a tabernacle in the heart of Jesus. Venerable Madre Teresa da Anunciada promoted veneration in the 17th century. Even King Pedro II gave money annually for an oil lamp to burn in front of the image.
Beginning in April 1700 AD, an annual solemn procession with the image (The Santo Cristo dos Milagres Holy Christ of Miracles) began, stopping at every Convent and Church in the city. Many enter the church on their knees asking for a grace. Countless graces and miracles have been received and many gifts offered in thanksgiving including, candles, jewels and hand embroidered capes that the sisters put on the image.
After Fatima, it is the largest religious celebration in Portugal, drawing thousands to the island.
