Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata (Church of the Most Holy Annunciation) is known for its Baroque features, distinctive bell tower, and majolica-tiled dome. The church’s origins link to the nearby Hospital of San Giovanni di Dio (founded 1183). Early references to an “Annunziata” dedication date to the late 14th century (e.g., 1372). Donations from Queen Margherita di Durazzo (mother of King Ladislaus of Naples) in 1404 and 1412 supported construction or expansion of a late-15th-century church.
An older structure (Santissima Annunziata Vecchia or Extra Moenia) was replaced. A flood in 1626 destroyed the late-15th-century church; the current building (Santissima Annunziata Nuova) was erected in 1627. In the early 18th century, architect Ferdinando Sanfelice directed major interventions, including the monumental bell tower (completed between roughly 1707 and 1737).
Further renovations occurred in the mid-19th century. The church suffered damage during the 1943 Allied landings at Salerno and was heavily impacted by the catastrophic 1954 flood (filled with mud and debris up to about two meters).
