Gorizia, Italy: The Cathedral of Gorizia

About the Cathedral of Gorizia:

The Cathedral of Gorizia is dedicated to Saints Hilary and Tatian. Originally built in the late 13 century, the cathedral has undergone several transformations over the centuries, most notably in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, when the Gothic nave was replaced with a Baroque church featuring a nave, two aisles, and galleries.  It has a simple exterior completed in Neoclassical style of the 19th century that contrasts sharply with the ornate interior.

The Baroque style dominates the interior, which is known for its lavish stucco and frescoes.

The  Cathedral contains some notable artworks including the ceiling of the Saint Acathius Chapel, with its depiction of musician angels from the mid-15th to early 16th century. Another highlight is the tombstone of the last Count of Gorizia, Leonardo, who died in 1500.
