Gorizia, Italy

About Gorizia, Italy:

Located in northeastern Italy, Gorizia is in the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, at the foot of the Julian Alps and bordering Slovenia. Gorizia has a rich history dating back to the 11th century, when it was first mentioned in a document by Holy Roman Emperor Otto III. It was the seat of the County of Gorizia, which was significant in medieval times. After the Counts of Gorizia died out in 1500, the town came under Habsburg rule until it was annexed by Italy after World War I.  Then, after World War II, the town was divided, with part becoming Nova Gorica in Slovenia and the rest remaining in Italy.

As a result of these historic transitions, Gorizia has a cultural blend of Italian, Germanic, and Slavic influences.  It was nominated as the European Capital of Culture for 2025, together with its Slovenian neighbor, Nova Gorica, highlighting its unique cross-border cultural identity. The Gorizia Castle dominates the town and is now a museum.

The city has been undergoing various projects in preparation for its role as the European Capital of Culture in 2025, including restorations, new cycling and walking trails, and cultural events.
