About San Damiano, Italy & Saint Francis of Assisi:
In 1205, St. Francis of Assisi was praying in this humble church when he reported hearing Christ speak to him from the crucifix, saying, “Francis, go and repair my house, which, as you see, is falling into ruin.”
This moment sparked his mission to renew the Church. The original crucifix, known as the San Damiano Cross, is now in the Basilica of Santa Chiara in Assisi, while a replica hangs in the church.
Later, in 1212, St. Clare established her religious community there, living in the adjacent convent until her death in 1253. The site includes a simple chapel, the nuns’ old dormitory, and a cloister, all exuding a quiet, timeless vibe.
