Jerusalem: “The Upper Room”

About the Upper Room in Jerusalem:

The “Upper Room”, also called the cenaculum (dining room), is a room in Mount Zion was a place traditionally known as the location of the Last Supper (the first Eucharist).

It is also where tradition says that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples (John 13:5: “Then he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded.”)…..now Holy Thursday on the Catholic calendar.

The apostles continued to gather here after the crucifixion out of fear of the Jews

It was here that the Holy Spirit descended upon the twelve apostles on what became known as Pentecost.  At this point Matthias had been “numbered with the eleven apostles” to replace Judas, as described in Acts 1:25.

Pentecost is a major liturgical feast 50 days after Easter. It is considered “the birthday of the Church” as it marks the beginning of the Church’s mission to spread the Gospel. The event is described in Acts 2:1-12, where the disciples are empowered to speak in different languages and proclaim the Good News.

The site is administered by the Israeli authorities, and is part of a building holding what is known as “David’s Tomb” on its ground floor.

The Upper Room is located just outside the old city walls.
