About the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Cologne, Germany:
This church was built in the 13th century, and is known as the Franciscan Church in Cologne, Germany, is officially known as the Minoritenkirche or Church of the Immaculate Conception (St. Mariä Empfängnis). It’s a notable example of Gothic architecture, with Romanesque elements. While the Franciscan order uses the church, it’s also used by the Kolpingwerk social association.
The church is notable for housing the tombs of two Blesseds: Duns Scotus and Adolph Kolping, both of whom were beatified by Pope John Paul II.
About Duns Scotus:
John Duns Scotus, OFM, was born in Duns Scotland sometime between December 23, 1265, and March 17, 1266. He was Catholic priest and Franciscan friar, university professor, philosopher and theologian. He is considered one of the four most important Christian philosopher-theologians of Western Europe in the High Middle Ages, together with Thomas Aquinas, Bonaventure and William of Ockham.
He died on November 8, 1308 here in Cologne.
About Adolph Kolping:
Adolph Kolping (1813–1865) was a German Catholic priest and social reformer, best known for founding the Kolping Society, an organization dedicated to supporting young workers during the Industrial Revolution. Kolping died of lung cancer in 1865 and was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1991.
His work laid the groundwork for Catholic social teaching, influencing Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum (Rights and Duties of Capital and Labor). Today, the Kolping Society operates in over 60 countries, supporting workers and families with education, housing, and community programs.
