About Saint Henry’s Cathedral in Helsinki, Finland:
St. Henry’s Cathedral (Finnish: Pyhän Henrikin katedraali; Swedish: Sankt Henriks katedral) is the Roman Catholic cathedral in Helsinki, Finland, and the seat of the Diocese of Helsinki. It is dedicated to St. Henry (Bishop Henrik), a 12th-century English-born or German-born bishop of Turku/Åbo, traditionally regarded as the patron saint of Finland and a key figure in the Christianization of the country. He was martyred around 1156.
Construction took place between 1858 and 1860 during the era when Finland was a Grand Duchy under the Russian Empire. It primarily served Russian Catholic soldiers and merchants in Helsinki. The church was completed in 1860 but not consecrated until 1904. The style is Gothic Revival, featuring a distinctive red-brick exterior with a prominent tall bell tower over the entrance. Statues of St. Henry, St. Peter, and St. Paul adorn the exterior. Includes stained glass windows, a relatively intimate and cosy atmosphere suitable for reflection. It houses relics associated with St. Henry (some moved here in 1998). It became the official cathedral of the newly erected Diocese of Helsinki in 1955. It is one of the oldest neo-Gothic (Gothic Revival) churches in Finland and the main Catholic church in the country.
