Kinshasa (formerly named Léopoldville from 1881 to 1966) is the capital and largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Kinshasa is one of the world’s fastest-growing megacities, with an estimated population of 18.5 million in 2026.

Kinshasa is a predominantly Catholic city within a heavily Christian country (there is also a large Protestant population and the Kimbanguist church, a prominent independent African church) . As the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)—home to Africa’s largest Catholic community—Kinshasa serves as the hub for the Archdiocese of Kinshasa, where over 56% of the population is Catholic. The church is a major social, educational, and cultural institution.

The Archdiocese of Kinshasa is immense, with a population of millions. Catholic schools are sought-after and considered the best in the city. Catholic events are massive; Pope Francis celebrated a Mass with roughly one million attendees in Kinshasa.

Our Lady of the Congo Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame du Congo): Located in Lingwala, this is the seat of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kinshasa. Built in 1947, it is a massive structure that has hosted historic visits from Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis. It is known for its vast interior and a notable fresco of an African Jesus and followers.

Paroisse Sainte-Anne: Situated near the central railway station in Gombe, this neo-Gothic church was completed in 1917 and served as the first cathedral of Kinshasa until 1972. It is a central landmark where the Belgian community and others often gather for major events.

Paroisse Universitaire Notre Dame de la Sagesse (NODASA): Located on the University of Kinshasa (UNIKIN) campus, this church is known for its unique architecture and is a significant center of Catholic life among students and academics.

Our Lady of Fatima Parish (Paroisse Notre Dame de Fatima): Renowned as one of the most beautiful and active churches in the city, it is a very popular place for Sunday Mass, offering services in multiple languages including Lingala, French, Latin, and English.

Sacred Heart Parish (Paroisse Sacré-Cœur): Located on Avenue Père Boka, it is a well-regarded parish in the city center.

Paroisse Saint-Joseph (Matonge): Famous for its location in the heart of the bustling Matonge neighborhood, this church has a long history of active participation in the social and political life of the city.

Paroisse Reine des Apôtres: Known for its active role in the community and its charismatic prayer groups, located in the Limete area.

Many parishes in Kinshasa feature outdoor grottoes dedicated to the Virgin Mary, such as the one at St. Peter’s Parish, which are popular sites for individual prayer and quiet contemplation. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Congo is particularly noted for its indigenous African artistic depictions of biblical scenes.

Kimwenza, located on the outskirts of Kinshasa, houses Jesuit missions and educational facilities that have been present since the late 19th century.

We recommend you do not travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo, including Kinshasa, at this time due to high crime and civil unrest. The U.S. has issued a Level 3 Travel Advisory….a Level 3 Travel Advisory (“Reconsider Travel”) is the third highest alert level issued by the U.S. Department of State, advising travelers to avoid or reconsider travel to a country due to serious risks. These risks often include high crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, or health crises.

If do choose to travel, it is recommended that you avoid the eastern provinces entirely ( North Kivu, South Kivu, Ituri, Haut-Uélé, Maniema, and Tanganyika provinces plus all areas within 30 miles (50km) of the Central African Republic border.

Apply for a visa well in advance via the official e-visa platform. While 7-day visas are available on arrival, securing one beforehand is safer.Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory. Malaria is endemic; bring medication and use repellent. Cholera and Monkeypox are present.

The economy is mostly cash-based (USD or Congolese Franc). Be prepared for corruption at airports; avoid displaying wealth and keep luggage tags safe.  Utilize trusted transport services. Do not try to travel by road to the east from Kinshasa.
