Križevci, Croatia: Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity

About The Greek-Catholic Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity in Križevci, Croatia:

The Cathedral is the seat of the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Križevci, the only Greek Catholic eparchy in Croatia and this part of Europ.

The cathedral features a harmonious blend of styles, with its present Neo-Gothic appearance largely resulting from a significant renovation between 1895 and 1897 by the famous architect Hermann Bollé. The original structure dates back to an Augustinian monastery from the early 14th century.

A point of special interest, the cathedral’s iconostasis was painted by some of the most renowned Croatian painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including Bela Čikoš Sesija, Ivan Tišov, Ferdo Kovačević, and Celestin Mato Medović.

The adjoining monastery complex houses the Bishop’s Residence, a consistorial hall, a small museum, and a valuable library. The library contains a rich collection of manuscripts, incunabula (books printed before 1501), and around 5,000 books dating from the 15th to the 20th century.

Pope Pius VI established Križevci as the seat for the Greek Catholic Eparchy (diocese) in 1777, at the urging of Empress Maria Theresa’s for a dedicated jurisdiction for her Greek-rite subjects, centered in Križevci’s Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. The cathedral is a significant historical and cultural monument that reflects the blending of different artistic styles and traditions.

Note: The Greek Catholic Church is in full Communion with Rome. The term “Greek Catholic” highlights their use of the Byzantine Rite, which was the ancient ecclesiastical “lingua franca” of the East, and their union with the papacy.
