Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada: Basilique-Cathédrale Saint-Michel (Basilica-Cathedral of Saint Michael)

About Basilique-Cathédrale Saint-Michel (Saint-Michel Basilica-Cathedral) in Sherbrooke, Quebec:

Basilique-Cathédrale Saint-Michel is a minor basilica the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke. It serves as the seat of the archdiocese (covering Sherbrooke, Nicolet, and Saint-Hyacinthe) and is dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel.

Construction of the current building began in 1915 (with foundations and lower sections from 1914–1917) under Bishop Paul-Stanislas LaRocque, who envisioned a grand Gothic cathedral inspired by Notre-Dame de Paris. Architect Louis-Napoléon Audet designed it in a Neo-Gothic style. Work halted due to funding shortages after the initial phase (creating what was called the “Chapelle Pauline”). Construction resumed in 1956–1957, and the building was completed and consecrated in 1957. It was elevated to minor basilica status by Pope John XXIII in 1959.

The structure stands on the heights of the Saint-Michel cliff (falaise Saint-Michel) in the historic center, dominating the city like an acropolis. The cathedral features Neo-Gothic architecture with pointed arches, majestic proportions, and two planned front towers (the project remains unfinished in that regard).

It is oriented east-west (choir toward the east). The façade includes a large rose window or window depicting the Four Evangelists.  The interior is bright and impressive, with a Latin cross plan. Highlights include: 105 stained-glass windows crafted by Rafaël Lardeur of Paris (designs by Brother Gérard Brassard). Themes cover angels and Biblical scenes in the nave, the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, popes and bishops, and large chevet windows featuring Jesus, Saint Michael, and Mary.

The Basilica has two pipe organs: a historic Casavant organ (moved and restored) in the gallery and a smaller neo-Baroque organ in the choir.

In addition to Archbishop’s chapel painted by Ozias Leduc, the Basilica contains numerous works of art, altars, and a crypt with bishops’ tombs. Since 2017, it has also housed the tomb/relics of Blessed Marie-Léonie Paradis.

A major restoration campaign launched around 2014 addressed water damage and aging; painting work refreshed the interior in 2024.
