Sherbrooke was settled around 1793–1802 as Hyatt’s Mills by Loyalist settlers and renamed in 1818 after Sir John Coape Sherbrooke. It grew as a milling and industrial center (textiles, manufacturing) thanks to hydropower, railways, and immigration. By the 20th century, it became a major regional center; municipal mergers in 2002 expanded it significantly. Today, services, education, and health sectors dominate.
