About Azerbaijan:
Officially called The Republic of Azerbaijan, the country covers approximately 33,204 square miles (86,000 square km) with a population of around 10.1 million. It is located in the South Caucasus, bordered by Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, and the Caspian Sea to the east. Over the course of history it was part of the Persian Empire then the Russian Empire, and finally the Soviet Union before gaining independence in 1991.
Ongoing tensions with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabak have broken out in open fighting on occasion, but a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia, brokered by U.S. president Trump, was signed in August 2025.
Azerbaijan is heavily reliant on oil and gas exports, with growing diversification in agriculture, tourism, and technology.
There is one time zone in Azerbaijan: it is GMT +4.
Catholic places of interest in Azerbaijan:
The Catholic community in Azerbaijan is small (which is an understatement) with estimates of approximately 300-1,000 local Catholics as of 2025, served by the Apostolic Prefecture of Baku since 2011. It has one church and four chapels situated in Baku, including its pro-cathedral the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Its legal status is ensured by the local law of the Azerbaijan Republic and has a special status thanks to the Concordat signed by Pope John Paul II and former president Heydar Aliyev.
