Austria: Pilgrimage Church of Maria Locherboden

About the Pilgrimage Church of Maria Locherboden Mötz

The church was consecrated in the year 1901 and it is said that mysterious lights were observed during the service. This is the Maria Locherboden tradition.  The Church stands on a hill atop Mieming Plateau and high above Inntal Valley and has been a beacon for pilgrims, hikers and visitors for centuries. The site of a grotto-like entrance to an underground gallery has been credited with many miracles in the 18th and 19th century, and the site quickly became a place of pilgrimage. Later, a church in Neo-Gothic style was erected on this site to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims.

Since then Locherboden has been venerated as one of the holiest places in Tirol, and countless people have visited the Madonna painting in the church to ask Mary to pray to Jesus on their behalf. A wonderful Way of the Cross with ornate wooden crosses winds from Mötz all the way up to Locherboden. From May to October monthly night pilgrimage processions are held on the 11th of the month and visitors come from all over Tirol and beyond.
