Yankton, South Dakota: The House of Mary

Yankton is located on the Missouri River just downstream of the Gavins Point Dam and Lewis and Clark Lake, and just upstream of the confluence with the James River.

About the Shrine of the House of Mary Shrine in Yankton, South dakota:

There is an interesting history to this Shrine and how it came to be. A young couple, Ed and Jean English, purchased land on the lake here on which to build a home. Although they had originally thought to sell off some of the excess property, a priest told them to “save a portion for God”. This they did, and the result is a testament to their efforts and the many volunteers and generous donors.

As you enter the Shrine, you will see a series of 9 pillars, depicting Mary’s life and apparitions and a statue of Mary. These were given by Larry and Irene Hames in thanks for Irene’s healing.

There is also a Chapel, a Rosary Pond, statue of the Pieta and much more to be seen here. Across the road, you will find a gift shop (open from May through October, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

They have Masses on Sat. at 9:00 with the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Rosary at 8:30. There is a Patriotic Rosary on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. They previously had Masses on Mondays in the summer, offered by a retired priest. They are not sure about the future, so check their website for the latest information.

The Shrine is in a beautiful natural setting and guests are welcome to come and tour on their own. They offer guided tours if desired.
