About Nerinx, Kentucky:
Nerinx was founded in the early 19th century by Father Stephen Theodore Badin. The town was renamed Nerinckx for Fr. Charles Nerinckx, the founder of the Sisters of Loretto. The Nerinx post office opened in 1899. The shortened spelling of Nerinx is now officially used.
About the Sisters of Loretto at the Foot of the Cross:
The congregation of the Sisters of Loretto at the Foot of the Cross was founded in rural Kentucky in 1812. The Sisters moved to the site around 1820. Today, the Sisters and Co-members continue to live out the Loretto Community’s mission to “work for justice and act for peace because the Gospel urges us.” In the United States and throughout the world, Loretto Community members serve in many fields, including education, healthcare, elder care, environmental stewardship and advocacy.
About the Loretto Community in Nerinx, Kentucky:
The Loretto Community consists of the congregation of the Sisters of Loretto and Loretto Co-members.
The Loretto Community has been a steward of the 788-acre Motherhouse property since 1824. Currently, the Motherhouse property includes a working farm, woods, wildflower fields in conservation and cow pastureland.
