Maria Taferl, Austria: Basilika Maria Taferl

About Basilika (Basilica) Maria Taferl in Maria Taferl, Austria:

Maria Taferl is an Austrian market municipality of 872 people in the District of Melk. It is home to the most important pilgrimage site in all of Lower Austria, Basilika Maria Taferl.

Basilika Maria Taferl (also known as the Pilgrimage Basilica of Maria Taferl) is a prominent Baroque pilgrimage church in the small market municipality of Maria Taferl, Lower Austria. It serves as the most important pilgrimage site in Lower Austria and ranks as the second most significant Marian shrine in Austria after Mariazell.

The name “Maria Taferl” (“Mary’s Little Tablet”) originates from a miraculous event in the 17th century. A small wooden tablet (Taferl) depicting the Virgin Mary, nailed to an oak tree on the hill, was associated with reported miracles in 1633 and 1642. This led to growing pilgrimage, prompting construction of the church starting in 1660. The foundation stone was laid on April 25, 1660, incorporating the historic oak tree site.Construction spanned several decades (roughly 1660–1710/1711 or up to 1724 in some accounts), beginning under architects like Georg Gerstenbrand and Italian Carlo Lurago, with the dome completed by the renowned Baroque master Jakob Prandtauer. The church was elevated to the status of basilica minor in 1947. It is dedicated to the Sorrowful Mother of God (Schmerzhafte Mutter Gottes), with a Gothic Pietà (statue of Mary holding the dead Christ) as its central devotional object.

The site has pre-Christian roots: the Taferlberg (Taferl Mountain) was once a Celtic place of sacrifice, and a megalithic stone associated with ancient rituals still stands near the church.Architecture and InteriorThe basilica features classic Baroque architecture with two prominent towers topped by dark onion domes, a red-roofed nave, and a light-colored facade. It sits dramatically on a hill at about 443 meters above sea level, offering sweeping panoramic views over the Danube Valley and toward the Alps. The interior is richly decorated in exuberant Baroque style, with gold leaf, frescoed ceilings, and ornate altars. A highlight is the colorful treasury room, featuring frescoes of miraculous healings and the shrine’s history.

The Basilica is under the care of the Missionary Oblates of Mary (OMI) and next to the Basilica is the monastery for the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. It is open for pilgrims and seekers who want to discover God in their lives.
