The Monastery of Saint Clare in Poligny was founded by Saint Colette of Corbie in 1415, in the spirit of her Reformation, on land donated by John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy. During the Ten Years’ War, in 1638, Poligny and the monastery were burned, and the Poor Clares went into exile until 1646. During the French Revolution, the sisters were once again dispersed, and the chapel was demolished.
However, the community re-established itself and rebuilt the chapel in 1838. The Chapelle Sainte-Colette (Chapel of Saint Colette) that was renovated in 2015 to commemorate the sixth centenary of its founding.
Today, Sisters of various nationalities work together to follow the paths of the Gospel for today, in poverty and joy, in fraternal life, in the praise of God, and in intercession. They offer hospitality for spiritual retreats, pilgrimages, adoration (e.g., regular Eucharistic adoration), and limited visits. Their motto ties into the local saying “À Dieu plaise Poligny” (“May it please God, Poligny”).
The liturgical services are sung and open to the public. The monastery attracts pilgrims, especially couples hoping for children.
It’s a place of peace and prayer, with beautiful architecture, and serves as a pilgrimage site.
