Certainly an unusual name for a town, the area was founded in the 1850s by German settlers and originally known as Whiteside’s Prairie. Because the local drinking water was so heavily mineralized that it was undrinkable, residents built cisterns to collect rainwater—giving rise to the community’s name. In 1858, a post office was established under the name “Cistern,” officially cementing the name change. Today it remains an un-incorporated area with a population of 1,308 as of the 2020 census.
