About Saint Olav Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway:
The main Catholic church in Trondheim, Norway is Saint Olav Cathedral. (Norwegian: St. Olav domkirke). Saint Olav’s congregation in Trondheim was first established on February 23, 1902. Before that, the Heart of Jesus congregation in Trondheim was established in 1872, and was merged with St Olav’s in 1929, It is built on the foundations of a cathedral designed by architect Per Kartvedt that had been consecrated in 1973 to serve as the new church of the Vicariate of Trondheim. In 1979 it was elevated from Rome to the status of cathedral, while the vicarage was converted into a prelature.
Bishop Bernt Ivar Eidsvig initiated a committee to plan a new cathedral in 2009 and the year after the architectural firm Eggen Arkitekter AS got the assignment. The previous church was demolished on May 25, 2014. The new church was finished in November 2016. It is, to say the least, a very mimimalist design that will not please everyone….but it still is a Catholic Church and you will receive the Eucharist at Mass.
Pope John Paul II visited Trondheim in June 1989 as part of a papal tour of the Nordic countries. It was the first time a pope had ever visited Norway. He held Mass outdoors in a stadium due to the size of the crowd.
