About Mauritius:

The Republic of Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 1200 miles (2,000 kilometers) off the southeast coast of the African continent. The country includes the island of Mauritius, Rodrigues, and the outer islands (Agaléga, St. Brandon and two disputed territories).

According to the latest government survey, the three major religions practiced here: Hindus account for 48.5% of the population, Christianity 32.7%, and Islam 17.3%. Most Christians are Roman Catholic. The capital and largest city is Port Louis, and is home to the Cathedral of Saint Denis (visited by Pope John Paul II in 1989).

Getting there:

According to the local airport authority, close to 3 million international passengers passed through the airport in 2014, served by several major international airlines in addition to the home carrier of Air Mauritius.

In addition to those arriving by air, Mauritius is a popular port of call for several cruise lines, including ships such as Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. A new terminal became operational in 2017 to offer improved services to all cruise passengers.

Costa Cruise lines has  a home port the Costa Croiciere in Port-Louis and offers an interesting itinerary that includes visits of Vanilla Islands. Silversea Cruise lines and Fred Olsen Cruises began home porting in Mauritius in 2017.
