Feast of Saint Vincent Pallotti

All Day -

Saint Vincent Pallotti (1795–1850) was an Italian Catholic priest and founder of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate (commonly known as the Pallottines).Born on April 21, 1795, in Rome to a devout family (Peter Paul Pallotti and Mary Magdalene De Rossi), he Vincent was the third of ten children. From childhood, he showed deep piety, serving as an altar boy and developing a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and saints like Francis of Assisi (he became a Third Order Franciscan). Despite initially aspiring to join the Capuchins, health issues prevented this, so he pursued studies instead, earning doctorates in philosophy and theology. He was ordained a priest on May 16, 1818, in the Diocese of Rome.

Known for his holiness, mystical experiences, tireless charity, and work among the poor, sick, and marginalized, he became a renowned confessor (including to prominent figures) and professor at Sapienza University in Rome. He emphasized collaboration between clergy and laity in evangelization, a forward-thinking idea for his time.In 1835, amid challenges facing the Church (including political turmoil in Italy and a perceived decline in faith), he founded the Union of Catholic Apostolate (later the Society of the Catholic Apostolate).

This innovative movement united priests, religious, and laypeople to revive Catholic faith, support missionary efforts, and perform works of charity. It included initiatives like schools for workers, orphanages, loan associations, homes for girls, and aid during crises (e.g., cholera outbreaks).Pallotti spent his life in Rome, living simply despite opportunities for comfort. He died on January 22, 1850, at age 54, reportedly from a severe cold caught after giving his cloak to a beggar.

His body was found incorrupt when exhumed years later.

He was beatified in 1950 by Pope Pius XII and canonized on January 20, 1963, by Pope John XXIII, who presented him as a model for active priests and for involving laity in the Church's mission.

His legacy continues through the Pallottines, who serve worldwide in education, missions, and charity. He is remembered as the "Apostle of Rome" for his universal call to apostolate—every Catholic as an apostle.

His body is enshrined here in the Church of the Holy Savior in Onda  in Rome, Italy.

We celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Vincent Pallotti on January 22.
