King Louis XVI, the last King of France before the Revolution, was executed by guillotine on January 21, 1793, in Paris after being convicted of treason by the National Convention, a pivotal event marking the end of French monarchy and escalating the French Revolution.

Louis XVI inherited a kingdom facing severe financial and social problems, which he failed to address effectively. His resistance to reform, influenced by his wife Marie Antoinette and his brothers, increased revolutionary fervor. The monarchy was formally abolished in September 1792, leading to his trial and execution.

Charged with High treason and conspiracy against the state, he was tried and convicted by the National ConventionHe was put to death in the Place de la Révolution (now Place de la Concorde), a shocking moment symbolizing the shift from divine right rule to republicanism, though he was viewed as responsible for his own downfall through incompetence and resistance to reform.

His execution by a guillotine blade in Parison on January 21, 1793 severed more than just the life of King Louis XIV.  It ended centuries of French monarchy and propelled the Revolution into its most radical phase. culminating in the monarchy's overthrow, the Reign of Terror, and Napoleon's rise, fundamentally reshaping France and brought severe persecution to the Catholic Church by confiscating its property, subordinating it to the state via the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, forcing clergy to swear oaths to the nation, and violently suppressing religious practice, leading to mass executions and the creation of state-sponsored cults like the Cult of Reason, ultimately forcing the Church to redefine its relationship with secular governments.
