Ha Nam, Vietnam: So Kien Basilica

About So Kien Basilica in Ha Nam, Vietnam:

Kien Basilica (also known as Ke So Church or Nhà thờ Sở Kiện / Vương cung Thánh đường Sở Kiện) is a stunning historic Catholic church located in Kien Khe town, Thanh Liem district, Ha Nam province. Built on a former lagoon with an ironwood floor to prevent sinking, So Kien Basilica features pointed arches and beautiful stained-glass windows depicting saints and biblical scenes.

Construction began in 1877 under Bishop Puginier (also known as Bishop Phuoc) and was completed and inaugurated around 1882–1883. It served as the cathedral for the Archdiocese of Hanoi (then part of the West Tonkin diocese) from 1882 until 1936, when the seat moved to St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Hanoi. Two 88-foot (27 meters) bell towers house four large bells with a total weight over 4.6 tons.

The interior blends East-West styles: a carved wooden sanctuary and altar lacquered in traditional Vietnamese gold, with sophisticated ceiling carvings. It houses an ancient organ, relics of Vietnamese martyrs (including items like blood-soaked cloths and torture instruments), and is linked to martyrs such as Priest Truong Van Thi and catechist Peter Truong Van Duong. The Basilica has a capacity for 4,000–5,000 people.

In 2010, it was elevated by the Holy See to the status of a Minor Basilica—the fourth in Vietnam—under the title of the Immaculate Conception. It’s also recognized as a national pilgrimage center for Vietnamese martyrs. The basilica stands out for its Gothic architecture inspired by European styles, particularly resembling the Duomo di Milano complex in Italy (the only one of its kind in Vietnam). This includes the main church, former bishop’s residence, and seminary buildings.

It’s often praised as one of the most beautiful Gothic structures in Vietnam, attracting visitors for its architectural fusion, historical significance, and peaceful spiritual atmosphere—especially amid the surrounding limestone mountains and Day River.
