Đà Nẵng, Vietnam: Cathedral Phu Ha

About The Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral Phu Ha in Đà Nẵng, Vietnam:

The Cathedral Phu Ha (Nhà thờ Phú Hạ) in Đà Nẵng, Vietnam, is the historic Da Nang Cathedral, also widely known as “the Pink Church” (Nhà thờ Màu Hồng) or Rooster Church (Nhà thờ Con Gà).  This is the prominent Catholic cathedral in the city, often listed under variations like “nhà thờ Phú Hạ” in local or historical contexts.  Built during the French colonial period, construction began in February 1923 and was completed in September 1924 (inaugurated on March 10, 1924, or around September in some accounts). It was designed and supervised by French priest Louis Vallet (from the Paris Foreign Missions) and served the French community in what was then called Tourane (Da Nang’s colonial name). Vietnamese artisans from Kim Bong village in Hoi An handled much of the actual building work.

It’s the only Catholic church in Da Nang constructed under French rule and features classic Gothic-style architecture with elements like pointed arches, stained-glass windows depicting biblical scenes (blending Vietnamese and French influences), and a striking pastel pink facade that gives it the popular “Pink Church” nickname.

The cathedral stands about 229 feet (70 meters) tall, including its bell tower topped by a metal weathercock in the shape of a rooster—hence the local name “Rooster Church“. This rooster symbolizes St. Peter’s repentance and awakening from the Gospel (not just a French Gallic symbol, though it’s often mistaken for one).yourvietnamtravel.com

It serves as the cathedral for the Diocese of Da Nang and remains an active place of worship for thousands of local Catholics, with daily masses primarily in Vietnamese.

.It’s a major tourist spot for its photogenic exterior, colonial history, and serene interior (beautiful hand-painted stencils on the ceiling and stained glass). Visitors often take photos outside, but dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees), stay quiet during services, and enter via the back gate on Yen Bai Street (the main Tran Phu entrance is often closed to visitors). No entry fee, but it’s best visited early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and heat. It’s especially magical during Christmas with decorations and events.
